Have a Great Workday! Practicing gratitude in the workplace
Healthcare marketers may find it interesting that a noted writer and magazine editor played a key role in establishing Thanksgiving as a national holiday. For 36 years, Sarah Josepha Hale lobbied for it in editorials and letters. In 1863, Hale must have felt oh-so-grateful when Abraham Lincoln finally made it official.
Like Hale, we know our words—including our words of thankfulness—make a difference. This Thanksgiving week, we offer ideas for bringing an attitude of gratitude to work with you—no matter the season.
Making gratitude a work habit
In recent years, expressing gratitude has gone from a nice thing to do to a bona fide health habit. Research has shown that cultivating gratitude can have positive effects on our bodies, minds and relationships. Here are three ways to practice it like a pro:
1. Appreciate the little things. When you have work to do, it can be easy to focus on challenges or the next to-do. Try to slow down—and at least briefly savor when something goes well. Maybe you got a call you were waiting for, met a deadline or had a productive meeting.
2. Say thanks. Let the people around you know you appreciate their efforts. You want to acknowledge good work, of course, but take opportunities to express gratitude beyond that too. Did a colleague make your day better with a funny story? Kind word? Great idea? Words of appreciation not only make a difference to others, but will boost your mood too.
3. Write it down. Gratitude journals may not seem like workplace tools, but don't underestimate the power of this exercise. According to gratitude research, people who write down the "good things" gain insight, feel more positive and cope better in times of stress.
