Set boundaries for better mental health

Having healthy boundaries with other people is crucial to your emotional well-being. These tips may help you get more comfortable with communicating your needs and setting limits—and sticking with them.

Establish healthy limits

Start small. Practice setting limits in small situations that feel easier.

State your needs clearly and calmly. Use "I" instead of "you" statements. If you're nervous, plan what to say.

Show respect. Encourage others to respect your limits by recognizing and respecting theirs.

Adjust your boundaries if your feelings change. What is and isn't OK with you now may change. You can reassess your boundaries as needed.

Get help if you struggle with boundary-setting skills. Ask a mental health professional.

Are your worries overwhelming? Ease anxiety in the moment with these tips.
